In 1991 I was given an opportunity that I could not let pass and that was to be part of the 1992 Expo 92 lake show team.

I was in the right place at the right time and with no experience, but loads of enthusiasm I took on the challenge of trying to learn as much as I could about lasers in 6 months as I possible could. This was in October 1992 and the Expo was due to start in Seville in April of 1992 and I knew nothing about lasers.

And so I worked as hard as I could for the next few months. I made lots of mistakes but with a forgiving boss and a team of people behind me I got to a point where I was sufficiently skilled to look as if i knew what I was doing. Sometimes I felt I was way over my head - and sometimes I was, but I looked like I knew what I was doing and day by day I managed to hang in until one day I actually did know what I was doing.

I was actually the number 3 person of a team of 3 providing the day to day running of the lasers and as number 3 I also had the fun part of making the tea and coffee and running all the errands. That was until the other 2 quit three days before the opening of the Expo. Panic.....

With 3 days to go I was left virtually alone with the lasers and with only a few months training - Help!

Hour turned to hour which turned to day and then week and soon we found ourselves packing up after the Expo finished in October 1992. It was very emotional to say good bye to everyone, but goodbye we had to do and I went home to england only to realize that I liked Spain and went back to live there for the next 6 years.

Sometime later I found myself in Manila. It was now 1999 and I was called to a meeting where my client said to me "We are looking for a show like this..." and proceeded to show me the Expo 1992 show on video. I mentioned that I was not only part of that show, but even on the video and sure enough a couple of minutes later there I was on the video tape.

A few hours later I was signing the contract for the 1999 / 2000 Millennium show for the Philippines.

I got this show on the basis that if I was in the video of the show I must know what I was doing! Hopefully by now I looked like I knew what I was doing, but the amazing thing for me was that a video of a show that happened 7 years prior just got me a show worth 270,000$.

You really never know how what you are doing right now will affect the future in a strange way. I had no idea that I would be working In Spain and I certainly had no idea that I would be working in The Philippines at the very time when they needed a show similar to the Expo show and I was the guy to do it.

It is a strange world, but it made me realize that I must be very good at all I do all of the time. You do not know who is watching both at present and in the future.

Always give your best - someone might just be watching you!
